  1. It reminds me of a day in Helsinki on the Suomenlinna (= Finnish Fortress) isle in summer 2002. I hadn’t seen sparrows (in Germany) for a long time, they had become very rare. I was so happy when I saw them there. Thank god the populations have recovered.

      • As far as I know the number of birds diminished due to land consolidation, through which hedges between the fields have been lost and too much use of pesticides. Nature and species protection have been improved and many dangerous substances are banned now.
        Sparrows are lucky because they are very adaptable to the environment. But other birds unfortunately aren’t: When I was a child the lawn in our garden was sometimes invaded by scores of starlings, these birds almost disappeared and are still rare.
