between giants – blog launch – day five

betweengiants(web)

Welcome to the last day of my blog launch!

It’s been five days of poetry, poetry, poetry and I’m grateful to everyone who visited, commented, contacted me or ordered the book, and I’m most definitely grateful to Graham, Jane, Robbie and Mark, along with Alec Patric and also Stephen Matthews from Ginninderra Press whose fantastic work is reflected in each detail of my latest book.

I’d also like to thank my wonderful wife, Brooke, for supporting me during the launch, the composition and editing of the poetry, and for every day we have together. Thank you.

Today I’ve got two pieces to share, hope you enjoy them – one is a mixture of the performance and ‘making of’ the poem ‘through the backyard’ and the other is an audio version of ‘Vesuvius sleeping.’

Check them out below

Poet and performer Robbie’s first poetry collection, Human Batteries, both eloquent and experimental, was released just last year and features the fantastic ‘Love Poem,’ which you can check out here and then why not read up on what’s behind the chapbook in my interview with Robbie.

Mark is a Sydney poet whose work has appeared in leading journals and anthologies such as Going Down Swinging, Cordite and Best Australian Poems – he’s also a fantastic spoken word artist – check out these two – and gave me a real thrill when he took between giants all the way to Saint Mark’s Square in Venice while on holiday! Thanks to both Mark and Robbie, I definitely owe you both!

between giants – blog launch – day three

The next performance from between giants is of ‘Now in the Night,’ by Tasmanian poet Jane Williams.

Jane is the author of five poetry volumes and a short story collection, her latest being City of Possibilities, which is an exciting mix of verse and haibun, but here’s one of my favourite pieces from an earlier collection (The Last Tourist) – ‘How the heart works.’ I’m in Jane’s debt for her wonderful performance and I have no hesitation recommending her for when you’re next browsing for poetry.

between giants is published by Ginninderra Press and is available through paypal here or by contacting me directly in the comments below for $18 (postage paid in Aus). Here’s a part of a mini review by Mark and a short poem from inside.

Mark William Jackson Ashley Capes has come through again with another brilliant collection. Moving on from “Stepping Over Seasons”, this time Capes takes inspiration from further ports and knits them seamlessly with domestic visions, melding Italian scenes with Australian ordinariness, but I mean “ordinary” in that Capes, as I’ve written before’ has a remarkable ability to draw poetic beauty out of seemingly “ordinary” moments and objects. For example, in “Archaeological Moment” Capes writes of a simple penny “a penny has come thousands of miles / to hibernate in the dirt // it’s not worth much / but neither is it worth nothing”.

And the poem Mark quotes from, archaeological moment as featured in Best Australian Poems 2012:

archaeological moment

a penny has come thousands of miles
to hibernate in the dirt

it’s not worth much
but neither is it worth nothing

once we clean it in a glass of coke
and the royal head has a nose again

we take it inside, though the first one
to tire of it reaches for the Sega

later on I don’t know which one of us
will take it to the front shed

where the Nissan lords it over dead flies
that gather in the window sill,

and hide the penny behind a landscape
mum and dad haven’t unpacked

years later when moving house
and neither one goes back for it

the penny can close its tiny eyes
to wait for a more archaeological moment.

Ashley Capes’ communication and exploration of the outer and inner worlds we inhabit is generous and inclusive, favouring sincerity over artifice and meaning over wordplay…

Capes walks a breathtaking tightrope between geographical locations and everyday miracles…

Congratulations also to Dhyan for winning the between giants giveaway, hope you enjoy it! Thank you also to the other entrants, please stay tuned for details of a launch early next year, once the holidays have finished and we’re all ready for more poetry. Readings from the Jane Williams’ Launch

Here’s a couple of youtube clips from the recent readings for the launch of Jane Williams’  latest collection City of Possibilities, released by IP.  Lots of great readers, including Jane Williams, Lorraine McGuigan, EA Gleeson, BN Oakman and Leah Kaminsky.  And I’m in the first one too. Actually, I half imagined someone to stand up and shout out for me to slow down, hahaha (crank the volume a bit)

Part One: Lorraine, EA Gleenson, BN Oakman and myself

Here’s a sample poem from the collection; ‘The art of being right’ which previously appeared in Page Seventeen Issue 8.

.

The art of being right

there’s a block between the pub just closed
and the one still open a good hour left of
drinking if he walks ahead which he has to
because she can’t keep up in those heels
those tears unpredictable as backyard fireworks
shouting the third degree (something about why
can’t they just have a quiet drink at home)
raising his own voice now but only because
of growing distance patiently repeating himself
as if to a small but gifted child I told you
spacing words like footsteps through a dummy
minefield I just needed a spew temporal conditional
and as happy endings go more tragic than trite
so I had a spew and now I’m right

New Poem featured in ‘Island’

Really pleased (despite what the postie did to it) to receive my copy of Island #123 which includes my poem ‘Birds Still Talking‘ along with a host of other great pieces. There’s always such a beautiful mix of poetry and visual arts, criticism and fiction in Island, it’s a great journal and I’m really happy to be in it.

I’ve only flipped through the pages but I’ve already found perhaps my favourite poem in the issue – ‘Matter’ by one of my favourite oz poets Jane Williams, and you can view more of her work at her blog.

Subs are open now for fiction and reviews, though poetry isn’t open again until July. Full details here.

page seventeen – issue 8 is out!

A big list of great pieces lurks beneath the leaves of this issue, much bigger than the one I’ve lazily copied from the web but nonetheless, inside you’ll find work by

Graham Nunn, Ivy Alvarez, David Prater, Amelia Walker, Matt Hetherington, Jane Williams, Graham Rowlands, Mark William Jackson, A. S Patric and Anna Ryan-Punch to name but a few.

It’s especially satisfying to receive this issue because, as I’ve mentioned, selecting the poetry for it was a blast, and seeing it all together is great. But better is the surprises, with the stories and competition entries, which I had yet to read, being revealed at last.

Enjoying having a good read.

Thanks again to Tiggy and to everyone who submitted!
